An Individual Development Plan (IDP) is a tool used to facilitate successful career progression. There is evidence for efficacy in using IDPs among the post-graduate research population that includes perceived usefulness and productivity (ref). However, less in known about using IDPs as a guide for career progression among early-stage clinical translational researchers. Through a 23 IDP Collaborative our goal is to define best practices for IDP use among this trainee population that has the unique task of conducting research that reduces delays of interventions that improve human health widely. We are currently involved in writing a Scoping Review to summarize what is known in the literature about IDPs that will inform the development or adaptation of existing IDPs the effectively prevent delays in successful career progression among clinical translational researchers.
